Public Health Laboratory

The Public Health Laboratory is our community’s first line of defense against public health threats like infectious diseases, toxins, and biohazards. Local health professionals, clinics, hospitals, and even law enforcement rely on the Public Health Laboratory to test and identify substances that could pose a serious risk to public health.

Our state-of-the-art facility is a full-service microbiological lab that provides clinical and reference testing in the areas of bacteriology, virology, serology, parasitology, toxicology, and mycology by both molecular and conventional methods. To prevent the spread of foodborne and waterborne illnesses, the Public Health Laboratory also offers food and water testing. In addition, we run the Nondiagnostic General Health Assessment (NGHA) Registration and Enforcement Program in Santa Clara County.

We also play a critical role in education and training. The Public Health Laboratory offers workshops, seminars, and presentations on a variety of topics, including laboratory and biological safety, blood-borne pathogen regulations, and chemical hygiene.
