The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program of Santa Clara County focuses on preventing and controlling the spread of hepatitis B virus from infected mothers to newborn infants. Services of surveillance, case management, collaboration, education, and consultation provided to ensure hepatitis B-exposed infants are identified and given timely appropriate preventive treatments, vaccinations, and post-vaccine testing.  The Center for Disease Control estimated 800 births born to hepatitis B infected mothers yearly in Santa Clara County; however, only 50% (400) of these infants are identified for preventive treatment. The success of perinatal hepatitis B transmission prevention requires the collaboration and coordination between the public health department, the laboratories, the prenatal care providers, the delivery hospitals, the infant care providers, and the infected mothers.

Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention services include:

• Processing surveillance of hepatitis B positive women in child bearing ages residing in the County of Santa Clara
• Providing hepatitis B infected mothers with phone counseling and educational materials
• Promoting and referring household contacts for hepatitis B screening and vaccination as indicated
• Collaborating with delivery hospitals to ensure hepatitis B exposed infants receive timely appropriate preventive treatment
• Collaborating with pediatric care providers to ensure hepatitis B exposed infants complete the hepatitis B vaccine series and the post-vaccine blood test
• Supporting delivery hospitals and health care providers in following the California Code of Regulation and Center for Disease Control Guidelines for perinatal hepatitis B prevention
• Providing consultation and or education to delivery hospitals and health care providers on perinatal hepatitis B management
• Coordinating with other counties and or states to ensure continuation of care for clients who have moved out of Santa Clara County
